those areas of law in which they have agreed to receive referrals, have no outstanding grievances, and carry malpractice insurance. Many areas of law also require the attorneys to sign a separate application certifying
experience in that area.

New Haven is the only referral service in Connecticut that meets the Standards for referral of the American Bar Association. Lawyer Referral provides coverage in the Greater New Haven, Waterbury and Valley regions, as well as
other areas throughout the State of Connecticut.

New York State Bar Association

http://www.nysba.org

The NYSBA's Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) lists attorneys in 41 counties in upstate New York that do not have a local bar association-sponsored lawyer referral service in substantial compliance with the American Bar Association’s Model Rules for such services.

LRIS panel members agree to give the first half-hour office consultation for no more than $25, and must provide free consultations for personal injury matters, workers' compensation, medical malpractice, unemployment, social security cases and veterans’ matters, if these are among their categories of law. Participants may register for no more than ten areas of practice.

The LRIS has quality control measures in place to ensure that referrals are handled fairly and expeditiously. It sends follow-up questionnaires to both clients and attorneys, asking about their experience and satisfaction level with the service. Attorneys must also return a quarterly report on the status of referrals. To help fund the LRIS, the service collects a percentage of the fee generated by referrals, and therefore discrepancies between client and attorney reports are flagged by the computer and investigated by the staff.

In past years, lawyer referral attorneys have helped out each time disasters (floods, ice, storms and tornadoes) strike upstate New York. An overwhelming number of LRIS panel members volunteer in these situations to give free advice for disaster victims. The LRIS cooperated with the Legal Referral Service in Manhattan to assist victims of the September 11, 2001 attack. The LRIS also participates in the ABA’s "Operation Enduring Lamp" by having attorneys listed who provide free consultations, and further services in some cases, for members of the military and their families affected by the military deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.

San Fernando Valley Bar Association

http://www.sfvba.org

Larger than the landmass of Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. combined, the San Fernando Valley covers some 200 square miles. Much of the impetus for establishing the SFVBA came from a desire to bring a branch of the municipal court to the Valley. By 1927 the first municipal court in the Valley was established. The SFVBA passed a resolution in 1964 that read in part, "We urge all members of the Bar, within their own communities, to actively support the full realization and exercise of civil rights by all citizens without regard for race, creed or national origin." In the 70s, the SFVBA developed programs to provide legal services to seniors and those of modest means. The SFVBA was perceived as a family law bar. In 1985 the SFVBA and Neighborhood Legal Services continued their history of cooperation by establishing the Family Law Center.

The history of the SFVBA/LRIS is a history of service to the public. Our referral service is certified by the State Bar of California and approved by the American Bar Association. We carefully and fully screen our panel attorneys. They have to demonstrate experience and expertise in their areas of practice. They also have to complete an oral interview process. The LRIS Director visits the offices LRIS members to see first hand the décor, the organizational systems, and to meet staff and access their professionalism. Furthermore, we survey clients to monitor the professionalism of the attorneys and of the referral staff. The referral staff is committed to providing service that exceeds expectations. Survey results are uniformly positive about LRIS staff and referral attorneys.
